Remember that weird Salvador Dali painting with the melting clock? Maybe he was inspired by the scorching Phoenix summer heat. Let’s face it, with temperatures in the 110- to 120-degree range, it’s hard to be motivated to do anything other than stick you head in your freezer, take an ice bath, or watch the movie “Frozen” over and over again.

However, you might be surprised to learn that there are, in fact, many things you and your family can do to have summer fun here in Phoenix. Here are 10 cool ideas (literally) from our friends at KNXV, ABC 15 (www.abc15.com) that we’d like to share with you.

1. Ice Skating – Put your skates on and chill out at one of several ice rinks across the Valley of the Sun. AZ Ice has three Valley locations in Arcadia, Gilbert, and Peoria. They offer free skating lessons every Wednesday and Saturday. The Ice Den has two locations, one in Scottsdale and the other Chandler. They offer affordable $5 Friday public skating with a live DJ, extreme lighting effects, and your skate rental is included in the price.

2. Butterfly Wonderland More than 3,000 beautiful butterflies call this Scottsdale sanctuary home. They share America’s largest butterfly conservatory with a variety of native Arizona desert species of insects. The Rivers of Amazon introduces you to exotic underwater life. Cool off in their 3-D Theater as you watch exciting and educational videos where butterflies leap to life.

3. Legoland Discovery Center When the kids can’t have a fun time outdoors due to soaring temperatures, you can take them to a really cool place where they can have fun, learn, and use up all that boundless energy. Located within the Arizona Mills Mall in Tempe, Legoland is a vast world of adventure where kids can fuel their imagination as well as enjoy two exciting thrill rides. It’s where “Everything Is Awesome!”

6. Children’s Museum Of Phoenix Located in a downtown landmark, the old Monroe School, the Children’s Museum of Phoenix is a great place to take the kids on a hot summer weekend. It’s an interactive and educational playground where kids can stretch their imaginations in air-conditioned comfort. Now that’s a cool idea!
