Practical in more ways than one, fuel-efficient like true subcompact cars, and with enough crossover-like spaciousness for medium-sized families, hatchbacks offer the best of both SUV and sedan worlds. It’s no wonder the hatch is the unofficial “clown car” of the automotive world.
In the heated battle for “clown car” supremacy, there are two clean contenders: The 2020 Honda Fit and VW Golf GTI. Small yet mighty, the Fit and GTI are roomy, versatile, and good on gas, but which new hatchback is best for you?
Roominess: Fit Fits More Cargo & Peeps
Both the Golf GTI and Fit are spacious hatchbacks, though it’s the Honda hatch that awards you with more room for activities. In fact, it’s a hands-down champion when it comes to cargo and passenger volume.
In the 2020 Fit, you get up to 52.7 cubic feet* of max cargo volume with the rear seats down, and occupants get up to 95.7 cu. ft. for their limbs to wiggle about. The new Golf GTI only provides 51.2 cu. ft. and 93. 5 cu. ft. of cargo and passenger volume, respectively.
“Honda’s subcompact hatchback also has more passenger space than most people would think possible, and its multi-way folding back seat is the key to its phenomenal versatility.” – Car and Driver
The Fit can thank its 2nd-row Magic Seat® for all that excellent versatility. What versatility, you ask? Honda Fit’s Magic Seat can contort in four unique ways, giving a new definition to the term “clown car.” (Heck, with its Magic Seat, the 2020 Honda Fit even offers comparable – nay, nearly identical – cargo space to the $60,000 Porsche Macan.)
Fold the back seat down to create a flat floor that utilizes every square inch of the cargo area. Great cargo configuration for bikes, loveseats, recliners, and other small appliances, toys, or furniture.
Transport longer items by folding down the back and front passenger-side seats. Excellent for items such as ladders, surfboards, tables, and lumber.
Uninstall the Magic Seat’s head cushions and fold the bottom cushions up to provide up to 48 inches of additional vertical space. Perfect for transporting and securing taller, thinner items like plants, antiques, and television screens.
Need a midday nap to take the edge off a stressful workday? Fold back the front passenger seat and recline the back row for a snooze while parked.
“Only Hermione Granger’s handbag challenges the Fit’s almost magical ability to swallow large items you wouldn’t think possible.” – Auto Trader

Fuel Efficiency: GTI’s No Match for the Honda Hatch
Every 2020 Honda Fit hatchback is fueled by a 1.5L inline-4 that makes up to 128 horsepower and 113 lb.-ft. of torque when combined with the CVT. The CVT is available on the entry LX and Sport Fit models, which come standard with a 6-speed manual, allowing it to churn out 130 hp and 114 lb.-ft. of torque.
Equipped with the CVT, most 2020 Honda Fit models are EPA-rated at 33 city/40 highway mpg, making Honda’s hatchback the clear-cut winner compared to the less fuel-efficient VW GTI, which gets 24 city/32 highway mpg. (We suppose that’s what happens when you put too large a powerplant in your smaller hatchback.)

Price: Honda Fit is Far More Affordable
There’re no bones about it: 2020 Honda Fit is one of the most affordable hatchbacks in America. With an MSRP of $16,190*, the 2020 Fit LX Manual is more than $12k cheaper than the comparably entry-level VW GTI S. Looking at the top of the models’ ranges, you’d save nearly $16k by buying the Honda Fit EX-L ($20,620*) over the Golf GTI Autobahn ($36,495).
“Small cars naturally sacrifice some comfort, refinement and features for a budget-friendly price tag, but the Fit makes fewer concessions than most.” – Edmunds
