With supply-chain issues making new models hot commodities, sales of certified used vehicles have reached an all-time high. Car buyers still want all the benefits of purchasing new — you know, like a spotless vehicle history report and great warranty coverage — but are currently limited by selection, a lackluster number of lease deals, and overall price. Instead, they’re opting for the middle ground between New and Used: Certified pre-owned.
Still, most shoppers are wary of buying certified used vehicles, even as average used car prices have soared. The common fear is that having a certified pre-owned stamp of approval doesn’t necessarily make a certified vehicle better than its non-certified equivalent. So, why spend more on one? But that fear is one that should be put to rest.
CPO vehicles are worth it—period. Just having an extended certified pre-owned warranty makes up for any premium paid over a used vehicle. If you take into consideration the numerous other benefits provided by a CPO program, it’s a no-brainer.
Now, choosing the right certified vehicle is another matter entirely. Not all certified used cars for sale are actually worth the extra cost. Let’s take a look at some of the best CPO vehicles to buy if you want to save money. (Psst! They’re all Hondas.)
Honda: Most Affordable CPO Brand
In an analysis of over one million used cars, it was discovered that Honda delivered the most value with its certified pre-owned program and vehicles. Honda took home the bacon in over half of the analyzed major metropolitan cities and states:
- In our home state of Arizona, Honda Accord sedans offered the best value as certified pre-owned.
- Honda Civics won out in California, Maryland, and Texas CPO markets.
- Honda CR-Vs were the cheapest certified pre-owned SUVs in Illinois, Indiana, New Jersey and New York.
“Honda has the lowest CPO premiums of any automaker,” says Phong Ly of ISeeCars.com, “so it is no surprise that the majority of the metro areas have a Honda as the vehicle with the lowest CPO premium.”
How low? Honda’s certified vehicles add an average of 1.9% (about $340) in cost over their non-certified models. The average CPO vehicle has an average of 3.6% in added costs (about $813) over its comparable non-certified model.
“The data indicates that consumers are more likely to find a CPO car at a highly competitive price at dealerships from the top brands on our list,” Ly adds. “However, they should also pay careful attention to what’s included in the certification.”
The Honda Certified Pre-Owned Program
Whether you’re shopping for yourself or need to buy your teen a used car in Phoenix, you’ll find that the Honda Certified program gives you more bang for your buck. Here’s what you get with your CPO Honda:
7-Year/100,000-Mile Powertrain Coverage
Enjoy added peace of mind with a 7-year warranty on your Honda’s engine and engine components. This is, of course, in addition to Honda’s 182-point inspection, which guarantees the vehicle is in the best condition possible.
2 Free Oil Changes
In the first year of ownership, your certified used Honda is eligible to get 2 complimentary oil changes at your chosen Honda service center.
24/7 Roadside Assistance
Like the Golden Girls, Honda thanks you for being a friend, a pal, and a confidante. As a token of that thanks, they’re providing concierge service and emergency roadside assistance with each CPO Honda, which lasts for the duration of its CPO Limited Warranty.
Before becoming certified, all used Honda vehicles with open recalls are repaired or fixed, so that you don’t have to worry about it.
If your certified used Honda suffers a breakdown while you’re away, Honda will hand you a check for the inconvenience.
3 Months of SiriusXM Radio
If your certified pre-owned Honda is properly equipped, Honda will throw in a free 90-day trial of SiriusXM Radio.
No Deductible for Repairs
“Honda CPO vehicles also have no deductible for repairs,” Ly states, “which in addition with the warranty terms provide high value at a minimal cost.”
You heard the man. The value of buying a Honda certified pre-owned vehicle right now is incredibly high. With all the added CPO program perks, and Honda’s penchant for rolling reliable vehicles off the conveyor belt, why wouldn’t you make one your next vehicle?
