It’s that time of year again when we take stock of our habits and strive to make healthier choices for ourselves. You know the drill: eat healthily, exercise regularly, shop frugally. These old standbys are good New Year’s resolutions, sure, but they don’t mean anything if you can’t find the resources that will inspire your success.

To help you shake things up while you get in shape in 2018, we’ve compiled a list of resources and local Phoenix places to help you stick to your New Year’s resolutions.

Shop at Phoenix Farmer’s Markets

Grocery shopping isn’t on anyone’s list of fun things to do, especially when you’ve got your kids in tow. Farmer’s markets are the perfect antidote.

Some of the Phoenix metropolitan area’s best farmer’s markets are open year-round, including Roadrunner Park Farmer’s Market. Shop for local and seasonal meats and produce, handcrafted skin care products, and set aside some family time to enjoy the popular Roadrunner Park’s playground and fishing pond on Saturdays.

Many farmer’s markets in Phoenix, including this one, accept debit cards as well as SNAP/EBT and participate in the Arizona Farmer’s Market Nutrition Program, which encourages low-income individuals and families to take advantage of fresh, healthy, locally sourced food grown and raised for maximum flavor and nutrition.

Here’s a tip: Tempted to try some new ingredient but have no idea how to prepare it? Farmers often bring along handouts of favorite recipes to make it easier for customers to enjoy their produce. So, be sure and ask vendors for ideas!

Healthy Grab & Go Food

Searching for a quick lunch in downtown Phoenix? Tasty Box will fix you up with a healthy bento-style lunch for $10 in under 10 minutes. So, if you’re short on time during a busy workday, you know where to go.

Each day, Tasty Box’s chefs prepare three box lunch options: One to cater to vegans, another for vegetarians, and a third for those carnivores who value sustainably sourced meat. Each lunch box is 600 calories or fewer, but every bite packs a delicious punch.

It’s always less expensive and healthier to pack your own lunch, and bento-style meals have been the traditional choice in Japan for just that reason. Tasty Box offers a healthy compromise between homemade quality and affordability, and may even inspire you to come up with your own meals.
