In an increasingly competitive compact crossover class, the 2017 Honda CR-V stands out from other vehicles, including the Toyota RAV4 and Ford Escape.  For over two decades, the CR-V has been the best-selling SUV in the United States thanks to its consistent combination of performance, functionality, comfort, and convenient amenities.  The 2017 CR-V has been completely redesigned to continue that trend of excellence, and drivers and reviewers alike are thrilled with the outcome.

What’s New for the 2017 Honda CR-V

With the rollout of its fifth-generation model, the new CR-V is available in four trims: LX, EX, EX-L, and Touring.  The biggest updates to the redesigned CR-V include:

  • Available turbocharged engine
  • Increase in size to include a longer and wider wheelbase with higher ground clearance
  • Newly available active safety features
  • Modern infotainment options

Performance

While the 2017 Honda CR-V comes standard with a solid 2.4-liter—it’s a robust inline-four engine that provides 185 horsepower—the reviewers at EdmundsKelley Blue Book, and MotorTrend enjoy the available 1.5L turbocharged engine; it offers an impressive 190 horsepower and solid acceleration, in addition to great fuel efficiency (EPA rating of 28 city/34 highway mpg).

Both engines are paired with Honda’s state-of-the-art continuously variable transmission (CVT) that includes a Sport mode and can be matched with AWD or 2WD drivetrains.

Interior Space

The 2016 Honda CR-V had the most available cargo space in its class, and with the increase in size for 2017, there is now more space available.

With the rear seat in use, you’ll have over 39 cubic feet of cargo space in the back.  When the split 60-40 rear seats are both folded flat, the interior cargo volume increases to an impressive 75.8 cubic feet.

If you are hauling people instead of cargo, the Honda CR-V has plenty of space for passengers, too.  The five-seater SUV has between 101 and 105 cubic feet of passenger volume, depending on the trim you choose.

Active Safety Features

The engineers at Honda know that safety is one of the top priorities for SUV drivers.  That’s why the 2017 Honda CR-V is equipped with the most sought-after features available.  All trims come standard with numerous active safety features, including:

  • Vehicle Stability Assist with Traction Control
  • Multi-angle rearview camera
  • LED daytime running lights
  • Brake assist

Available on the EX, EX-L, and Touring trims, the Honda Sensing Safety Suite adds additional driver-assist features, including:

  • Collision Mitigation Braking System
  • Road Departure Mitigation
  • Lane Keeping Assist
  • Adaptive Cruise Control w/ Low Speed Follow
  • Blind Spot Monitoring with Cross-Traffic Alert

How Does the 2017 CR-V Stand Up Against Competitors?

Facing off against long-time competition including the Ford Escape and Toyota RAV4, the 2017 Honda CR-V not only holds its own, but in many ways it also surpasses the competition.  It outperforms especially well when comparing fuel efficiency, cargo space, and performance.

With a combined fuel efficiency of 28 MPG, the CR-V passes the Escape SE and RAV4 XLE, which only provide 26 MPG and 24 MPG respectively.  The 2017 Honda CR-V has an impressive maximum cargo space of nearly 76 cubic feet; the RAV4 has just over 73 cubic feet and the Escape lags behind with only 68 cubic feet of available space.

Comparing standard powertrain components across the three vehicles, the CR-V again beats out the RAV4 and the Escape.  The 2.4-liter engine and its 184hp helps the CR-V accelerate smoothly and handle great, even at high speeds.  The Ford Escape comes standard with a 2.5-liter, four-cylinder that provides 168 horsepower, and the Toyota RAV4 is equipped with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that offers 176 horsepower.
