As COVID-19 (SARS-CoV-2) continues to spread across the globe and country, several Arizona communities have set up drive-thru testing centers for the public. While still in their infancy, these mobile coronavirus test locations are very much needed to ease worries and concerns, to find treatment for those who feel ill, and to stop the virus from spreading.

If you have any symptoms of COVID-19 — dry cough, fever and shortness of breath are most common — please contact your healthcare provider or doctor for further instructions. You may be asked to self-quarantine or visit one of these drive-thru testing tents in Arizona:

Banner Health: Phoenix, Mesa & Tucson, AZ

Currently, Banner Health operates 4 coronavirus testing and specimen-collection sites in northwest Phoenix, southeast Phoenix, Mesa and Tucson. These sites are open from 7 AM to 6 PM (Mon-Thur) and 7 AM to 5 PM (Fri).

Anyone who suspects they’ve contracted COVID-19 must contact the Banner Health hotline directly at 1-844-549-1851 to be screened; wait times may be lengthy, so be prepared.

You do not need a standing doctor’s order to seek coronavirus testing through Banner Health. COVID-19 screenings are conducted over the phone to determine testing eligibility. Banner Health team members will assess each caller for symptoms and schedule drive-through appointments as appropriate. People arriving at these drive-through testing facilities without an appointment will be turned away.

Coronavirus testing may also be available in Banner Health’s Payson and Page, Arizona, clinics, and plans are in place to launch additional mobile COVID collection sites in the near future. More info can be found here.

About Your COVID-19 Drive-Thru Test: What to Expect

Although all medical facilities and testing sites operate differently, you can generally expect the following:

  • Stay in your car
  • Bring any doctor’s referral or confirmation number with you
  • Anticipate long wait times in line
  • Wait times may make kids antsy, so be sure to have a video loaded up on your Honda Odyssey’s rear entertainment system
  • Tests will involve a nose swab and/or a throat swab
  • The test itself is relatively painless but can be uncomfortable
  • While you await test results, act as if you’ve tested positive — self-isolate and manage your illness at home, away from other members of the household
  • If, at any time during your self-quarantine, your symptoms worsen, dial 911 for emergency care
  • Test results may not be available for several days
  • When results do come in, a medical professional will notify you and cover your next steps
