Like Godzilla vs. Mothra, Japan’s two automotive titans – Honda and Toyota – have been engaged in a gargantuan, decades-long contest for the hearts, minds, and wallets of car buyers around the world. Similar to our classic sci-fi adversaries pictured here, these two premier Asian automakers have squared off against one another time and again, pitting their outstanding cars, minivans, and trucks against one another in an all-out duel for automotive supremacy.

Today, we continue this epic struggle with a no-holds-barred comparison of the 2017 Honda Odyssey LX and the 2017 Toyota Sienna. While we won’t be watching these two minivans go after one another above the skies of Tokyo like Godzilla and Mothra, we nevertheless expect some fireworks as we put these two popular family haulers to the test. So sit back, grab some popcorn, and let’s get started!

Odyssey Scores Style Points

Honda Odyssey

Put the 2017 Honda Odyssey next to the 2017 Toyota Sienna, and we think it’s obvious that the Odyssey has lots more curb appeal than its rather drab-looking counterpart. Honda recently gave the Odyssey a complete makeover, endowing it with a more upscale and sporty appearance. The Odyssey’s sleek silhouette is complemented by chrome accents that add some pop. Honda uses creases along the lower side fascia and right behind the “C” pillar to create some visual momentum. The Sienna, on the other hand, is essentially featureless, with little to distinguish itself from just about any other minivan out there.

Innovative Odyssey Interior A Winner

Both Honda and Toyota know how to craft excellent interiors. But in this regard, Honda comes out ahead in several key areas. First off, the Odyssey simply has more overall passenger volume compared to the Sienna. To be specific, you’ll get 172.6 cubic feet of space in the Odyssey compared to just 164.4 cubic feet of space in the Sienna. And the Odyssey also offers more 2nd-row and 3rd-row legroom than the Sienna as well.

Most people buy minivans to haul lots of people and lots of stuff. When it comes to accommodating people, you’ll be amazed at how much better the 8-passenger 2017 Odyssey is than the 2017 Sienna. Only the Odyssey comes with Honda’s exclusive 3rd-row Magic Seat®. The seat folds flat in one easy motion to increase cargo space when you need it. And if you need some more elbow room, the Wide-Mode 2nd-Row Seats on the Odyssey move out to either side.

HondaVac

You’ll also find that the Odyssey features a standard power driver’s seat, which is something you can have on the Sienna if you’re willing to pay extra for it. But that’s not all. Only the Odyssey has HondaVac®, clever a built-in vacuum with a long reach, powerful suction, and a removable waste bin that makes cleaning up the Odyssey’s spacious and versatile interior a snap. No other minivan has this unique convenience feature.

Odyssey Takes Tech Prize

Both the Honda Odyssey and Toyota Sienna offer a wide range of advanced technology features. In fact, you’ll find lots of similarity between these two well-equipped minivans.

Compared to the Sienna’s smaller 7-inch touchscreen, Odyssey’s oversized 8-inch touchscreen “Intelligent Multi-Information Display” (iMID) puts you in control of many useful high-tech features. Wireless Bluetooth® lets you make and receive calls hands-free while the available “Streaming Audio by Voice®” lets you verbally access many different functions.

The iMID also shows navigational maps, displays a standard rearview camera, and allows you to access standard and available services like Pandora®, SiriusXM® Radio, and HD Radio® Digital AM & FM. A USB audio interface lets you hook up your audio device and control it either via the iMID display or steering wheel-mounted controls.

The Odyssey’s available “Ultrawide” Rear Entertainment System consists of a large 16.2-inch split screen with wireless headphones that lets rear-seat passengers enjoy DVDs or use it to play their favorite video games.

The Sienna counters with its premium Entune App Suite™ that offers similar capabilities.

Fuel Economy A Plus For Odyssey

Now let’s take a look at performance and fuel economy. Here, again, both the 2017 Honda Odyssey and 2017 Toyota Sienna are pretty evenly matched.

The Odyssey is motivated by a 3.5-liter, i-VTEC® V6 engine that generates 248 hp and 250 lb. ft. of torque. While the Toyota Sienna’s 3.5-liter V6 does offer more horsepower, it does so at the expense of fuel economy. The Odyssey gets up to an EPA-estimated* 28 mpg highway compared to 27 highway mpg for the Sienna.

Odyssey A Safe Bet.

Finally, when it comes to safety, both the Honda Odyssey and Toyota Sienna feature an array of advanced safety features. In addition to offering a standard multi-view rear backup camera with guidelines, you’ll also find that the Honda Odyssey offers some of the most cutting-edge safety technologies on the road today.

The Odyssey’s available “Honda Sensing®” suite of driver-assist technologies features a standard multi-angle rearview camera with dynamic guidelines, lane departure warning, lane keeping assist, road departure mitigation, adaptive cruise control, blind spot information system, expanded view driver’s mirror, forward collision warning, and collision-mitigation braking.

You’ll get some, but not all, of these available safety features on the Sienna. Not surprisingly, both the Odyssey and the Sienna get high safety marks from the IIHS and the NHTSA.

While we’re on the subject of accolades, we should point out that the Honda Odyssey has a slew of them from top automotive industry experts. We find it interesting that the 2016 Honda Odyssey was a Kelly Blue Book 2016 Best Buy Award Winner, while the 2016 Toyota Sienna was a 2016 Kelly Blue Book Best Buy Award Finalist. There’s a big difference between the words “winner” and “finalist” if you ask us.
