The Civic Hatchback, once a Honda-lovers love interest, hasn’t seen a new model year since G.W. was in office. For 2017, that’s all about to change. With some world-class style, incredible handling, and a slew of praise-worthy features, Honda’s latest hatch is a striking reminder that good things come in all shapes and sizes. “Honda’s five-door 2017 Civic Hatchback is the best five-door compact car in its class.” That’s what Digital Trends says about the ’17 Civic Hatch, and critics all over the internet agree.

A New & Improved Civic Hatchback in 5 Trims

After 12 years of living on the shelf, the all-new Civic Hatchback is back for more. Built on the Civic’s premier platform, this hatch features a unique Civic Sport trim that includes athletic wheels, a sloping aerodynamic hood, and a curveless rear door.

A bold front-end is the first of many noticeable exterior designs on this five-door hatch. Slanted LED headlights push into the blackened grille, which looks almost nonexistent in the right lighting. That black extends along the undersides and back to the rear bumper, which is fittingly accentuated by a centered set of stainless steel exhaust outlets.

Aggressive 18-inch wheels are low to the ground—those black accents give off the illusion of a lower floor-to-chassis clearance—and appear to always be spinning. Bracketed by Honda’s parenthetical LED taillights, the hatch door itself, emblazoned with originality, is flatter than what you’d expect on a hatchback.

Under the hood is a powerful little 1.5L turbo that produces 180 horsepower. Other features include a leather steering wheel and shifter, aluminum race-inspired pedals, and fog lights.

The Civic Hatchback LX sits underneath the Sport trim. It comes standard with a 174-hp turbocharged engine, 5-inch color display, automatic climate control, a rearview camera, and a 6-speed (which can be upgraded).

EX and EX-L Navi models are seated in the middle of the lineup. The Civic Hatch EX includes a power moonroof, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, 17-inch alloy wheels, dual-zone climate, an upgraded 7-inch touchscreen, Honda LaneWatch™, and remote engine start. In addition to the standard features of the EX, the upgraded EX-L Navi trim comes equipped with interior leather trimmings, satellite navigation with voice recognition, heated front seats, and a comfy 8-way power driver’s seat.

Leading the starting lineup is the Sport Touring, which comes with all the standard features in the EX-L Navi, plus the entire Honda Sensing™ suite, dual paddle shifters, and a 540-watt 12-speaker sound system.

Exceptional Interior No Matter the Trim

Exceptional Interior No Matter the Trim

Each nook, cranny, seat, and feature in the new Civic Hatchback has been engineered to perfection.

The front seats offer exceptional lumbar support and sit low to the floor without impeding visibility. In the rear, seats are just as comfy; passengers have plenty of legroom, too. Fold those back seats down and put the hatchback into full cargo mode. With over 46 cubic feet of storage space—that’s just a bit less than the Honda Fit—you’ll have room to lug around a bike and some golf bags.

From the door panel to the central bin to the rear seat, storage bins are littered throughout the cabin. Remove the center cup holders and shelving sections in the front, and you’ve got a storage compartment that could hold a full-grown otter—or a few tablets. (We don’t judge either way.)

The dashboard is simple yet functional, offering an array of handy features, such as a driver-side USB port, futuristic instrumentation cluster, and new control knobs. Upgrade to a higher trim with extra features, and you’ll love life in the Civic Hatchback. The 540-watt sound system reverberates windows only when you want them to reverberate. Navigation with voice recognition is well beyond responsive, pushing into scary-intuitive territory. And satellite radio means fewer commercials and more tunes.
