The Honda Civic has long set the bar for excellence in the compact sedan segment, and the 2018 Civic is living up to that high standard with state-of-the-art safety features, great fuel economy, snappy styling and a super-fun driving experience! Still, it’s not the only sedan out there, so we thought it’d be interesting to see how the 2018 Civic fares against one of its chief rivals in the field — namely, the 2018 Hyundai Elantra. Read on to see how the critics compare these two cars.
Kelley Blue Book Civic vs. Elantra Comparison
Reviewers at Kelley Blue Book rate hundreds of vehicles each year, and many of those vehicles aren’t worth the time it takes to test drive. Not so with the new Civic!
The 2018 Honda Civic earned an overall KBB rating of 9.4, while the Elantra fell a bit short with a rating of 9.0. Why do Kelley Blue Book critics love the 2018 Honda Civic? Because it’s spacious, fuel-efficient, fun to drive, stylish, and –c’mon—it’s a Honda! That’s probably a big reason for its Best Small Car win, too.
The Elantra isn’t exactly an object of disdain among KBB reviewers, but they did feel that it “can’t match the roominess or resale value of a Honda Civic.” And although the Elantra is a decent Sedan, reviewers just couldn’t rate the driving experience on the same level as the Civic’s.
Car and Driver Sedan Comparison
Car and Driver reviewers rate cars with a star system (1-5 stars with 5 being the best). So, how’d did our rivals fare? The 2018 Honda Civic receives five glorious stars. And the 2018 Hyundai Elantra? It gets 3-1/2 stars from Car and Driver’s critics.
To say that Car and Driver likes the new Honda Civic is an understatement. In fact, they call it “everything a compact car should be.” Their comment on the Elantra isn’t quite as glowing: “A solid, jack-of-all-trades choice, even if it falls short of the top of its class.”
U.S. News and World Reports Best Car Reviews
If you’ve ever read a car review by U.S. News and World Reports, you know that they have a section dedicated to comparing the cars they’re reviewing to a leading competitor’s offering. In their review of the 2018 Hyundai Elantra, they ask “Which is Better? Hyundai Elantra or Honda Civic?” (We bet you can already guess what their answer was.) Their expert verdict? “For a highly rated car with good fuel economy, generous safety features, and a great price, go with the Civic.”
In all seriousness, the 2018 Hyundai Elantra is a nice sedan, but it just can’t live up to the 2018 Honda Civic. With the Civic you get it all, including:
- a spacious cabin;
- distinctive styling;
- great EPA ratings;
- state-of-the-art technology;
- available Honda Sensing (lane-keeping assist, collision mitigation braking, adaptive cruise control, and road departure mitigation);
- standard 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine or a peppier 1.5-liter turbocharged engine;
- seven trim levels (base LX, EX, EX-T, EX-L, and Touring, plus the Si Performance model and the legendary Civic Type R);
- great standard features like automatic climate control, rearview camera, folding rear seat, and a 4-speaker AM/FM audio system with USB port, Bluetooth connectivity, and a 5-inch screen;
- and loads of great options such as remote engine start, moonroof, 7″ touchscreen, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, heated front and rear seats, and much more!
The Comparison is Over: Honda Wins!
